Dr. Merritt E Lawson, J
Covenant Bible Institute was founded in the late 1980s by Dr. Merritt E Lawson, Jr after serving many years as a Seminary Professor and Academic Dean.
His years in the United States Marine Corps established a commitment to self–discipline that he never lost. He maintained self–discipline the rest of his life, and found his years as a Marine served him well in leading others to discipline themselves to prepare for disciplined ministries in many life venues.
Dr. Lawson’s love for Jesus Christ led him to the belief that God’s service is the most important thing for any life to achieve, and he spent virtually all of his adult years in unselfish service to God and His Kingdom.
An early focus of Covenant Bible Institute was to prepare individuals for ministry as institutional chaplains, bringing God’s comfort and guidance to people in pain and uncertainty.
Dr. Lawson held to his devotion to God’s Word, once asking an inquirer to go outside and look at the name of the Institute.
“Notice,” he observed, “the middle name of our school!” Of course, the individual to whom he was speaking looked, and saw, “Covenant BIBLE Institute.”
Dr. Lawson’s life was guided by his devotion, not only to teaching, but to living the direction of Scripture, day–by–day.
Dr. Lawson knew that a life built on the timeless truths of Scripture, established in the past would be able to withstand the pressures of the present and the challenges of the future.
On the afternoon of December 24, 2018 Dr. Lawson went to be with the Lord.
He must surely have been rejoicing in Heaven as we on earth were commemorating the birth of our eternal Savior, God the Son
