A Call to Prayer: Honoring the National Day of Prayer with CBI

National Day of Prayer - CBI

It’s the first Thursday of May, and that means it’s the National Day of Prayer. We at Covenant Bible Institute (CBI) invite you to join us in observing this sacred tradition that unites believers across the nation in humble petition and praise to our sovereign God. This day is more than a date on the calendar; it is a clarion call to the Church to return to the heart of our faith: prayer.

The Heartbeat of a Nation: A Brief History

The roots of the National Day of Prayer trace back to the very founding of our nation. In 1775, the Continental Congress called upon the colonies to pray for wisdom in forming a new nation. This tradition continued through the years, with President Abraham Lincoln proclaiming a day of “humiliation, fasting, and prayer” in 1863 during the Civil War.

In 1952, amidst the tensions of the Korean War, President Harry S. Truman signed into law a joint resolution by Congress, establishing an annual National Day of Prayer. Later, in 1988, President Ronald Reagan amended the law, designating the first Thursday of May as the official day of observance. Since then, every U.S. president has signed a proclamation encouraging Americans to pray on this day.

The Power and Purpose of Prayer

Prayer is the lifeline between the believer and God. It is through prayer that we communicate with our Creator, seek His guidance, confess our sins, and intercede for others. In times of national crisis, prayer has been the anchor that holds us steady. As President Barack Obama stated in his 2016 National Day of Prayer proclamation, “In times of steady calm and extraordinary change alike, Americans of all walks of life have long turned to prayer to seek refuge, demonstrate gratitude, and discover peace.”

At CBI, we emphasize the importance of a robust prayer life as part of our commitment to spiritual formation. Our programs are designed not only to educate but also to cultivate a deep, personal relationship with God through consistent prayer and study of His Word.

What Scripture Says About Prayer

The Bible is filled with reminders that prayer is not only vital—it’s powerful. It’s how we commune with God, align our hearts with His will, and stand in the gap for others.

Jesus Himself modeled a life of prayer, often retreating to quiet places to seek the Father (Luke 5:16). He taught His disciples to pray with sincerity and faith, saying, “When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen” (Matthew 6:6, NIV).

The Apostle Paul encouraged the early church to be “faithful in prayer” (Romans 12:12) and to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17), reminding believers that prayer should be a constant part of their daily lives.

James 5:16 powerfully declares, “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” It’s through prayer that healing comes, strongholds are broken, and God’s presence is made known in our lives and communities.

CBI’s Mission: Equipping Believers to Flourish

At Covenant Bible Institute, we hold fast to these truths, not just as theology, but as a way of life. Prayer is essential for every believer who seeks to walk closely with the Lord and be used by Him for Kingdom purposes. We believe that spiritual growth begins with a firm foundation in God’s Word—and continues through a life lived in faithful obedience to Him. Our mission is to equip men and women to be biblically grounded, spiritually mature, and ready to serve wherever God calls them.

Whether you’re preparing for pastoral ministry, leadership within your church, or simply seeking to grow in your walk with Christ, our programs are designed to help you thrive. With an emphasis on both sound doctrine and Spirit-led living, CBI fosters a learning environment where students are challenged, encouraged, and prepared to be effective ministers of the Gospel in today’s world.

Through interactive courses, practical ministry opportunities, and a Christ-centered community, we aim to raise up leaders who not only know the truth but live it boldly and compassionately in every sphere of influence.

Join Us in Prayer

As we approach this National Day of Prayer, we encourage you to set aside time to seek the Lord. Whether individually, with your family, or as part of a community gathering, let us unite in prayer for our nation, our leaders, our communities, and the Church.

Consider these prayer points:

  • Repentance and Renewal: That we, as a nation, would turn from our sins and seek God’s forgiveness.
  • Wisdom for Leaders: That those in positions of authority would govern with integrity and discernment.
Unity in the Church: That believers across denominations would come together in love and purpose.
  • Spiritual Awakening: That hearts would be opened to the Gospel and lives transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit.
